Daybreak has broken, and spackled light floods through the red cups that lean in their stacks against the wall. Each dimple in their foundation kaleidoscopes light across the yellowing plaster. Legend has it those cups were the only remnants left floating in the wreckage after one of the strongest hurricanes to hit Marathon and the rest of the Keys in 100 years, Hurricane Irma, in 2017. Likely, they got a good washing and went back on the shelf for customers as soon as the restaurant’s doors opened again. Romantics, writers and fishermen would find hidden meaning or symbolism in that, but for the folks at Stout’s Restaurant, the cups were just one less thing to buy after the storm.
