“Mayfly hatches used to be prolific across Europe. Nowadays, due to pollution and habitat deterioration, hatches are far less abundant. Last spring, I experienced a blast from the past while visiting Lough Arrow in Ireland with guide Jackie Mahon. The mayflies’ dance of death, as Jackie calls it, brings thousands of spinners to the water just before evening to complete their cycle, and it is something I will never forget.” Photo: Álvaro G.
